Maps, Roads & Borders

From Kosi Bay border to Catembe on the sand road and the car ferry across to Maputo.
There is no other way but the dirt track/road. You will need a 4x4 vehicle, however the locals manage to do this route with old 4x2 vehicles. The road to Catembe is 117 km but can take you between 3,5 to 5 hours depending on the season, can be fair or in bad shape with a great deal of water. Plan a full day, and be grateful for any extra time you make up, it is a relatively time consuming drive either way due to the nature of the road. If it is your first time, get good routes [GPS] from someone who knows the area and has plotted their route. Remember also that the speed limit in/near villages is 25 km/h, and is enforced, penalties are harsh, and payable immediately. The ferry experience are fair to good, one old rusty plus a new larger ferry/boat departing every 30 minutes from opposite sides. Fees are 200 Mt per vehicle and driver plus 5 Mt per passenger.

New Ferry from Maputo
From Maputo CBD to Marracuene (30km)
There are 3 roads leading from Maputo to Marracuene and the up north.
SCWEB prefer the Narrow Dirt Road, used it on the way up.
Couldn't get on to it on the way back, GPS got lost within Marracuene and we landed on the NO-GO ROAD. Took me 3,5 hours instead of 30 minutes, 2 hours wasted in the area around the red X.
The Tar Road is used from Komatipoort, Swaziland and Ponta do Ouro.

Overview of road from Maputo to Inhambane:
The National Road going north from Maputo (EN 1) is a fairly new and good tar road all the way to Xai Xai. (218km)
From Xai Xai to Chissibuca the stretch of 97km is severely potholed and currently major roadwork repairs are undertaken - August 2009. Thereafter the road is in great condition again all the way to the Inhambane turn off. (233km)
From here it is potholed again and last bit gravel road (57km).

From Maracuene to Praia da Barra / Inhambane
From Maracuene pass small villages Bobole 16km, Maluane 12km, Manhica 22km, Mimbirre 52km, Magul 9km, Macia 11km, Incaia 13km, Chimonzo 9km, Chicumbane 23km and Xai-Xai 21km (218km north of Maputo) wher you can re-fuel.

Continue on the North Coastal Road passing smaller villages and towns, including Chongoene 17km, Chizavane 25km, Chidenguele 21km, Chissibuca 36km, Mavila 15km, Quissico 17km, Inharrime 45km, Nhacoongo 26km, Cumbano 24km, Lindella 7km. The road splits here. You carry on straight to Maxixe and Beira.
You must go right to Inhambane.

As you reach Inhambane 10km there are 2 speed humps which can damage your car or trailer. Carry straight on with the road until you get the harbour and jetty on the left, turn right here and carry on until you get an elongated circle. Go around it and go to the right. This is the road to Tofo and Barra. Carry on approximately 16km until you get a bar called Bar Babalaza where the road splits, to the right the tar road goes to Tofo and straight the dirt road goes to Barra 8km.
